The very word ‘careers’ brings back to mind the latter part of my secondary years of schooling – when we were supposed to know what we wanted to do when we left school. In the previous few years, the thought of actually growing up and leaving that place of learning, tedium, inspiration, frustration, excitement and much inbetween was so far from our minds. Today the same quandery is placed upon most students when they reach their first year of upper schooling. Even earlier – and yet a child has not had the chance to look around and know what they fancy doing for a lifetime of paid employment. Gone are the days of the eldest son going into the forces with a commission, the second son going into the church and the youngest son staying local, so as to be on hand for the parents as they age. Gone also are the simple choices of ‘I want to be . . . a train driver/bus driver/policeman/doctor/nurse’ It’s so much more involved nowadays, one can choose a career in law – that won’t mean just trying to be a barrister or judge. No, there is myriad of careers out there within that one industry. Solicitor, commercial lawyer, patents lawyer, paralegal, legal secretary, clerk of chambers, etc. Fantastic opportunities now for every child, not just those from priviledged backgrounds.
