There are so many careers available to women these days. It is not something that now worries the slightly aging brains – they can pick and choose what they want to do to earn an income and there is no bar to trying for the best job in the land. This is so different to the days before the first world war and in fact,up to about the 1970s. There was always the problem of men’s insistance that women keep to their place i.e. at home doing the drudgery of keeping house and cooking, with all the attached jobs like shopping and giving birth to the babies. This situation never really upset the majority of the femaile in the land until they were required to step up to take men’s jobs in the war period – the men having been called up or volunteered to fight for king and country. There were still very definite ceilings – concrete ones, to the bright, well educated woman progressing. So often we hear about women musicians who wished to make a career out of their undoubted talents but being held back by convensions of the time. So many wasted talents of players and composers that have remained unherd of because the men came first! Careers advice was never forthcoming. How wonderful today that we can enjoy the very best of women in every field, every industry and every genre, no holds barred!
